1. Challenge

The 45th National Congress of the Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN) united 5,160 experts in Valencia during its 50th anniversary year. According to the organisation, this gathering is the biggest medical conference in Spain. This requires a substantial human and logistical effort. Furthermore, it planned to exhibit approximately 40 stands during the conference with the intention of engaging members of society and increasing the visibility of the medical professionals.

2. Solution

To accommodate a high volume of participants, a large conference area was provided by combining the Valencia Conference Centre and the adjacent hotel rooms, resulting in a spacious conference facility.

During the four-day event, 163 scientific activities took place. More than 500 speakers, specialising mainly in family studies but also other areas, presented 4,224 papers. As a new feature of this Congress, there were 22 'speaker corners' where experts from various working groups provided a brief presentation on current topics to the attendees.

Similarly, 55 sponsors took part and over 250 expert logistics support personnel, such as the Technical Secretariat, catering and auxiliary staff, and room and assembly personnel, offered logistical assistance. All attendees collectively used over 5,000 hotel rooms.

3. Acomplished goals

The 45th SEMERGEN Congress convened over 5,000 physicians in Valencia during its 50th anniversary year, resulting in over 13,000 overnight stays. According to the organisation, this amounts to a total of 10 million euros for Valencia.

To celebrate the Society's 50th anniversary, various informative activities were also held for the public, such as the 'Health Fair and March' in the Turia Gardens and the screening of the documentary 'CERCA DE TI’ [CLOSE TO YOU], which the scientific society produced to show the day-to-day life of family doctors and their relationship with their patients and their environment, and to vindicate their transcendental role in Spanish public health care.
