The Valencia Conference Centre, a meeting point for 700 scientists and researchers from all over the world

From 9th to 13th July, the Valencia Conference Centre will be hosting the Euromembrane 2018 congress, bringing together 700 scientists and researchers from all over the world, mainly from France, Italy, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom.

This event, which has been organised by the membrane group of the Research Institute for Industrial, Radiophysical and Environmental Safety at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) on behalf of the European Membrane Society (EMS), aims to stimulate contact between academic and industrial scientists to share and exchange knowledge in the field of membrane science and technology.

As a result of the application of these initiatives, especially in Spain and the UPV, it is worth mentioning the institute’s broad network of relations with entities and companies in different production sectors, such as textiles, tanning, petrochemicals, metallurgy, ceramics and food and agriculture, as well as with different entities linked to water. It also has a social agenda, having participated in several development aid projects on water purification in rural areas in countries such as Ecuador and Mozambique over the last few years.

In addition to the parallel sessions, this event will feature 258 oral and 518 poster presentations. Internationally prominent figures attending the congress include Simon Judd, who holds an Industrial Chair in Environmental Engineering at Qatar University and is also a Professor in Membrane Technology at the Cranfield Water Science Institute at Cranfield University in the UK; Klaus-V. Peinemann, Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia who is also the co-founder of GMT Membrantechnik GmbH in Germany, which is a leading company in Europe for the production of membranes for gas and vapour separation; João G. Crespo, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal; and Richard Baker who founded Membrane Technology and Research, Inc. (MTR), which has been a leading membrane research, development, engineering, and production company for 25 years. Baker is currently leading MTR’s new development programme for membrane-based biomass/biofuel ethanol separations.

For the first time this year, the Patrick Meares Prize symposium will be held (Patrick Meares was one of the pioneers of membrane science), and the European Membrane Society (EMS) will be awarding a prize for the best doctoral work on membrane science.The scientific programme will be accompanied by acomplete social agenda with excursions to the most emblematic places in Valenica and a gala dinner inthe unique setting of the 17th century former Catthusian Monastery. In the words of the Co-President of the congress, Dr. María Isabel Alcaina Miranda: “The buildings and rooms are very beautiful and pleasant. It is an exclusive, symbolic place associated with our culture and traditions”.
