Valencia, the venue chosen to reveal the latest secrets of the universe
After being held in Japan and Canada, the TAUP conference arrives in Spain in 2021
The Conference Centre is hosting this international scientific conference for the first time
Valencia has been chosen, for the first time, to host the 17th International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics (TAUP 2021), one of the world’s most important scientific meetings on Astroparticle Physics, which examines issues that are key to understanding the cosmos, such as the nature of the neutrino, the detection of dark matter and the origin and evolution of the universe.
From 30th August to 3rd September 2021, our venue will be bringing together around 600 experts in particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Why we live in a world of matter and not antimatter; the dark matter that makes up a quarter of the universe but remains a mystery to science; or what gravitational waves and high-energy cosmic rays can tell us about the cosmos will be some of the key issues discussed at this international conference. Some of the experiments in this field are carried out in unique locations such as underground laboratories, in space, at the South Pole or at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.
The candidacy for the conference was proposed by the Institute for Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), a joint research centre run by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia, together with research groups from CIEMAT and the Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT, UAM-CSIC), and from the universities of Alcalá de Henares, Granada, the Balearic Islands, Santiago de Compostela and Saragossa.
The TAUP conferences began in 1989 and are held every two years. The last meeting took place in 2019 in the Japanese city of Toyama and was attended by over 500 scientists, including the winners of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics, Takaaki Kajita and Arthur McDonald. The last time the conference was held in Spain was in 2005 when it took place in Saragossa.
The meetings alternate between European, American and Asian venues. The last one held in Europe was in Turin in 2015, with participants coming from 50 different countries.
