40th EACTAIC Congress: we bring together over 600 specialists to address patient safety in perioperative environments

The latest edition of this event features international joint sessions and more than 170 scientific papers

From 12 to 14 November, Valencia Conference Centre has become a meeting point for a community working at the frontier between anaesthesia, intensive care and heart surgery. The 40th Annual Congress of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) has come Valencia with a clear focus: patient safety and monitoring in the perioperative, intraoperative and intensive care settings.

A broad event, it is a truly multidisciplinary and international meeting of minds, with the participation of European scientific societies (Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Cardiovascular Imaging, Perfusion and Nursing) as well those from the United States and Canada. Over 600 specialists have come together at our Conference Centre, generating around 1,300 overnight stays in the city.

For patient safety

Recent advances in clinical safety in anaesthesiology and cardiothoracic and vascular critical care are closely linked to more accurate and reliable monitoring techniques. The congress devotes a specific session to defining what patient safety means today and to reviewing the best available evidence on optimal monitoring in these scenarios.

In the words of the chairman of the local organising committee, Dr Manuel Granell, “this Congress is very useful in advancing the use of safe anaesthetic techniques through the use of more suitable monitoring methods, shown to help reduce perioperative complications. All this adapted to the new less invasive surgical technologies, such as robotic or video-assisted surgery”. What’s more, “the congress is running very smoothly indeed thanks to the versatility of the Conference Centre facilities and the performance of the team”, Dr. Granell stressed.

The opening of the event was attended by the General Director of Research and Innovation of the Regional Government of Valencia, Mariola Penadés; the Vice-Dean of Institutional Relations of the Universitat de València, Guillermo Sáez; and the President of the Spanish Society of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy, Javier García.

Crossing disciplines and a vision of the future

The design of the programme presents a natural crossover of EACTAIC with other specialities and offers 170 high level scientific papers presented by professionals from all five continents.

The event also incorporates transversal areas that are setting the agenda for this specialist area. These include sustainability in clinical practice and its operational impact; or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) as a framework for a more open and representative scientific community.

The pre-programme includes practical workshops focusing on critical competencies and reserves a specific space for young specialists, tied in the association’s scholarship programme, with a dedicated lounge and didactic sessions for professional development.

All these elements cement the global and collaborative nature of the congress, consolidating it as a benchmark event for patient safety in the cardiothoracic and vascular environment.
