The Valencia Conference Centre continues to be committed to a greener and more inclusive future, which is why, as part of the actions carried out to achieve the 2030 agenda, it has produced a Guide for the organisation of sustainable events. This manual has been presented today to the internal team and collaborating entities, in a meeting in which the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Emiliano García, has participated and in which it has been shown how the sum of the team’s efforts can become a leverage for change in sustainability in business tourism.
This initiative, whose launch coincides with the recent celebration of World Environment Day, aims to encourage the global commitment of the staff, strategic allied entities that are collaborating in the lines of work framed in the building’s sustainable strategy and companies organising events, with the ultimate aim of actively contributing from all areas of the Centre’s activity to the fulfilment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The guide is a tool that proposes different actions and recommendations to the organising companies to raise awareness of the importance of reducing the negative social and environmental impact generated by the event and maximising the benefits that the community can obtain from its legacy. The scope of its action ranges from the design and development of congresses to the time after their completion, considering all aspects of the activity: sustainable mobility, circular economy, minimisation of food waste, etc.
This initiative also aims to promote healthy lifestyles and to integrate sustainable behavioural habits, serving as an inspirational model in the sector. These actions are fully aligned with the Centre’s sustainable strategy and contribute to the progress towards the decarbonisation of the urban environment and the well-being of citizens, which will help to achieve new challenges such as the European Green Capital in 2024, recognition for which Valencia is already an official candidate.
In addition to calculating the total carbon footprint and the water footprint, the conference centre offers organising companies the possibility of calculating the carbon footprint and offsetting it by means of nature-based absorption projects, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of events.
Thanks to their participation on sustainable agriculture projects, such as the development of urban market gardens, the recovery of natural spaces, reforestation and green infrastructure, which increase the capacity to fix the CO2 captured by the soil, improve air quality and reduce acoustic pollution, clients of the conference centre do their bit for the planet and help to boost Valencia’s credentials in domestic and international sustainable tourism.
